Today is your favorite. Go through at least one chapter in your manuscript and take out all the adverbs and adjectives. Just go through and hack them. While you’re doing that peaceful activity, count how many you have. Now read back through the chapter. Do you NEED to put them back in? Why? What can you do to show what the adverbs and adjectives were doing for you? There is a time and a place for adverbs and adjectives and I’m not saying you can NEVER use them but it’s important to be thoughtful, to tighten up our writing. Do this with as much of your manuscript as you dare.
As Mr. Twain said, “If you see an adverb, kill it.”
