Did you know this man walked across the Grand Canyon in jeans?

First of all I’ve been fascinated by the whole thing. Insane. Why is he doing this? Is he going to fall? How long did he train? How can he be prepared? Shouldn’t someone stop him?

And then jeans.

Last night I was obsessed with watching the video of the walk but I couldn’t get it streaming and It was stressing me out. I knew he’d made it across–tweets–but I still wanted to watch.  I tried and tried to get the video to work and finally Cam said, Honey. You might have to watch it tomorrow.

So I watched it today. First thing in the morning.

He walked on a wire across the grand canyon.

This made me think a few things:

  1. anything is possible if you prepare.
  2. even crazy things. I can’t believe this guy even thought this up, let alone did it.
  3. and you can wear jeans.

Like why didn’t he wear special wind pants or spandex? Why jeans?

Then I thought, I have been trying not so successfully to do the TOTALLY RAD SUMMER OF 2013 CHALLENGE each week. Except not really. Instead I’ve been half-heartedly doing it. and then giving myself excuses. I realized, with this tight-rope man, that if I want to, I can write a book. Right now. I can get out of this headspace i’m in and write a book. I can also read 1000 books. And swim in 5009 pools. I can do flips. I can do handstands. I can even do a belly flop IF I WANT TO. I can do anything.

So my goals for this week are the same as last week. Except this time, I’m going to want to. I’m going to stop the excuses. Stop the down talk. And try. I’m going to write whatever comes into my head and then I’m going to follow it. I’m going to do something different today than I did yesterday (wink) and see if that makes a difference.

So that’s my goal.

I also might go to a movie.

  1. Which movie? Good luck with the challenge! I always want to write. I have a hard time discerning if I want something else more, though. And then I read blogs while I’m deciding.

  2. i read about him and his family in reader’s digest i think. but that video was nervous to watch! it looked like one of his sons couldn’t even watch. i don’t know if i could see one of my parents do that. very mixed emotions.

you can do amazing things. you already have! and you will keep doing them because you make your goals happen. that’s something i really admire about you.

  3. Dan

That’s funny about the jeans. That was actually one of the first things I was thinking when we watched it. Why is that dork wearing jeans? My take away was that you can do anything as long as you say “sweet Jesus”, and “crazy Jesus” a lot.

  4. Kyra

I couldn’t watch the video. My heart was racing far too fast….sdlfasldfl eek!

  5. I love that you always find THE THINGS.

  6. My goals for this past week included:

READING: Read—and I did on the way to the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City. NOT write while there—and I didn’t! And for once, I didn’t feel “guilty” for not writing while I was there, but read when I could. I did a little with reading emails—but very little. I still have over 100 to catch up with. NEXT UP: Continue reading Overlander books (though they’re not NEARLY as gripping as HUNGER GAMES—but, of course, they’re at a different level: MG.) And read and read and read fairy tales, while I work on . . . (see 2nd goal)

WRITING: I did finish almost every WIFYR assignment, including the POV change which I wrote at 5am the last day of WIFYR. It went over—to my surprise—so well, that it has changed the whole novel markedly! NEXT UP: Work on my fairy tale mashup through July at NaNoWriMo’s “summer camp” — I’ll see how far I get with it my Aug. 1.

FUN: Saw the Shakespearean Festival plays plus one show at Tuacahn, as promised. NEXT UP: Read more, and more, and more fairy tales. And start Swimming. Exercising. DAILY. (Well, to be practical, how about 5 times per week?)
